This is a good time to be a DJ in Nigeria. The respect for the profession is at an all-time high, the revenue streams have opened up, and with a little PR and some mixes, a DJ can stay relevant as a glorified iTunes playlist. No offense.
There’s a palpable shift within the music industry. Previously, when one thinks of music making and stardom, the singers and rappers get all the acclaim and stardust. But slowly, within the last four years, we have seen a steady rise in recognition of DJs.
Pulse conducted a poll to determine who the public currently think is the best disc jockey in the nation. We pit DJ Xclusive, DJ Jimmy Jatt, DJ Spinall, DJ Sose and the delectable DJ Cuppy.DJ Xclusive came out tops with 44%. The young pretty boy is regarded as one of the new brands of classy disc jockeying in the country, and has amassed dedicated fans and social media influence. He has released a new album, ‘According To X’, which hit retail stores and vendors yesterday (June 29).Surprisingly there is a tie between veteran DJ Jimmy Jatt, and DJ Cuppy. Both are tied at 26.5%. DJ Jimmy Jatt’s veteran status keeps him strong in the game. DJ Cuppy on the other hand, has achieved fame from promotion and ultimately her father’s name – Otedola.DJ Sose received negligent votes.DJ Spinall and DJ Sose received negligent numbers, performing woefully on the poll.
