In Nigeria 190,000 children die of diarrhoea yearly - Medical practitioner "The very simple act of hand washing with soap can save hundreds of thousands of children who needlessly die every year.'' Dr Jude Oko , a member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abuja chapter, has said that no fewer than 190,000 children die of diarrhoea in Nigeria every year. Oko, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday, described the situation as regrettable, and emphasised the need for regular hand washing, which he said, was crucial in preventing the disease. Bird flu disease Veterinary Services destroys 40,154 birds Dr Hannah Bissiw cautioned that the ministry would not negotiate on the ban because that would encourage the spread of the virus. The Veterinary Services Department (USD), has destroyed 40,154 birds and 1,103 crates of eggs as part of measures to contain the spread of the bird flu disease in the Greater Accra, Volta and Ashanti regions. In addition, 37 bags of feed have been destroyed, with a feed mill situated in an outbreak area under investigation for destruction, while 23,987 birds have died  from the disease. France , the European Union 's biggest agriculture producer, reported an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus in chickens on Wednesday, its first since 2007. " A case of avian influenza has been confirmed in a backyard in Dordogne, " the farm ministry said in a statement. The bird flu outbreak, found among chickens, is the first to be reported in France since 2007 when it had been detected in wild swans, data from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) showed. Several countries including Japan, Egypt and Hong Kong banned French poultry following past outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1. In Lagos Police kill 5 suspected robbers in shootout The suspects engaged the police in a shootout as soon as they saw them. Fodé Sylla , Spokesman for Guinea's Ebola Coordination Unit, said on Wednesday in Conakry that a baby girl, who was the last known Ebola patient in a two-year regional epidemic, has recovered from the disease. Hungry Thief Jobless man in court for stealing neighbours' food A jobless and hungry man who stole food items from his neighbours has been arraigned in a court in Lagos.   Daniel Noah , a 42-year old unemployed man, has been dragged to the Isolo Magistrates' Court sitting in Lagos State for allegedly breaking into the apartment of two of his neighbours to steal food items worth N20,000, PM News reports. Noah, a resident of Mushin Road, Itire area of the state, told the police that he was driven by hunger to steal the food items which include a half bag of rice, groundnut oil, sugar, eggs, plantain chips, can malt drinks and others, belonging to Christian Offia and Emmanuel Orji .
