Police representative, Abdi Hassan, said that some soldiers tried to prevent the distribution of food aid coupons to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) for unknown reasons.
"Other soldiers intervened and a gun battle ensued involving 10 fatalities and at least 15 injured victims, including soldiers and civilians," Hassan said.
Hassan also said that women were among the fatalities, and that security forces were investigating the incident.
Thousands of IDPs are living in the Mogadishu area after fleeing the Islamist group al-Shabaab, droughts or recent flooding.
