In Akwa Ibom Court unseats Governor Udom, orders fresh elections in all 31 LGAs
Udom’s election victory had been initially challenged by opponent
and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Umana Okon Umana at the
state election petitions tribunal.
The Court of Appeal has nullified the victory of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel Udom in the April 11 elections.
The Appeal Court reached the decision today, December 17, 2015, in Abuja.
In delivering its judgment, the court held that the election violated the Electoral Act.
It subsequently ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct rerun elections within 90 days.
Udom’s election victory had been initially challenged by opponent and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Umana Okon Umana at the state election petitions tribunal.
The
tribunal later cancelled the polls in 18 out of the 31 Local Government
Areas of the state and ordered rerun elections in the affected areas.
Udom challenged this decision at the Court of Appeal but his petition was dismissed and the tribunal’s decision was upheld.
The entire election was eventually cancelled based on a petition to that effect by Umana.
