Jungle Justice Lagos mob lynches suspected 'Okada' thief
A ypoung man who tried to steal a motorcycle was beaten to death by an angry mob in Lagos.
A suspected motorcycle thief, identified as Moses Uche, has been beaten to death by a mob in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State for alleged stealing, reports the Punch.
It was also reported that a security guard, Suleiman Sanni,
who was among the three-man security team guarding a house on Otubo
Street, Irawo, when the deceased sneaked in around 2am and was caught in
the act, has been arrested by the police.
Sanni was alleged to have woken up the residents of the house and a mob quickly formed around the 24-year-old Uche, and beat him with all manners of weapons, including planks and iron rods.
He
was said to have been taken in a wheelbarrow around 7am to the Ajegunle
Police Division, where he later died and Sanni was promptly arrested.
Sanni, an indigene of Katsina State, told reporters that he did not touch the victim.
“I
was guarding a house with two others. Around 2am that night, I sighted
the man entering a house and trying to steal a motorcycle.
When
I challenged him, he said the motorcycle belonged to him. I alerted the
residents of the house and they started hitting him.
I
was even the one that rescued the victim and took him to the police
station but he died two days later. I was arrested and taken to the
station. Before I knew it, I was taken to the State Department of
Criminal Investigation, Yaba.”
He was later arraigned at the Ebute-Meta Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder.
The police prosecutor, Woman Corporal Iyobosa Onaiwu, said the offence was punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defendant’s plea was not taken while the Magistrate, Miss M.O. Ope-Agbe, remanded him in prison and adjourned till January 19, 2016.
