In Plateau Street sweepers appeal to Govt to pay their stipends

The sweepers said they were hampered in the performance of their duty by a myriad of factors.
Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong.
Street sweepers in Plateau on Wednesday appealed to the Plateau Government to pay arrears of their N8, 000 monthly stipend.
The sweepers, made up mainly of widows, made the plea through the Plateau Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Mr Abdullahi Abbas on Wednesday.
The sweepers said they were hampered in the performance of their duty by a myriad of factors.
These, they said, included non-payment and non-provision of designated dumping sites in their various localities.
One of them, Mrs Ladi Damulak, told the commissioner that their only source of income was the stipend.
" We work for three to four months without earning any salary yet we still ensure clean environment,"  she said.
She appealed to government to be prompt with the payment and also solicited an increase.
According to her, this is what most of us and our children live on.
Mama Nanpong, leader of the sweepers in Langtang Local Government also complained of lack of tools for a clean environment.
She said it had been long that government provided them with working materials and also complained of the poor welfare to which they were subjected.
Nanpong appealed to the government for proper welfare and tools to enhance and facilitate their work.
The commissioner assured the women of government’s commitment to addressing the issues raised.
He said government just came on board and was just settling down to business.
