Kashim Shettima
Governor commends corps members for choosing Borno
"And I assure you that the state government will put in place
security measures to guarantee the security of your lives and
properties,’’ Shettima said.
Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno had assured the 300 Batch-A-Stream-2 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members that had chosen to serve in the state of their safety.
The
governor gave the assurance on Wednesday at the closing ceremony of the
orientation for 1,678 Batch-A-Stream-2 corps members held in Nasarawa State.
Shettima,
represented by Alhaji Abdulkadir Ayuba, the Permanent Secretary of
Borno State Liaison Office in Abuja, commended the corps members for
choosing to serve in the state.
The News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise was held at the Dan Yamusa
Orientation Camp, Keffi Local Government area of Nasarawa State.
Shettima said he was happy that the 300 corps members chose to complete their primary assignments in Borno.
He described the gesture as an act of courage and patriotism on their parts in the face of the security situation in the state.
"For the bold and courageous way you have resolved to come with us to Borno, I salute your doggedness.
"And
I assure you that the state government will put in place security
measures to guarantee the security of your lives and properties,’’ Shettima said.
He said that President Muhammadu Buhari–led administration had renewed its vigour in its fight against terrorism in the North-East part of the country.
He,
therefore, assured the corps members of adequate security and urged
them to feel relaxed and be focused on their national assignments.
"You
will recall that the president during his inaugural address to the
nation had directed the central command of the military to relocate to
Maiduguri.
"Furthermore, the Borno State Government is committed to supporting the NYSC to better your welfare.
"I
will ensure that the necessary appropriation will continue to be
provided to sustain the gains of the service and also provide for the
welfare and security of all corps members deployed to Borno State," he said.
Earlier,
the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Alhaji Lawal Turawa, disclosed that
300 out of the 1,678 Batch-A-Stream-2 corps members who participated in
the orientation chose to Borno as the state for their primary
assignments.
One of the corps members, Mr Adedigba
Oluwasegun, said his decision to serve in Borno was borne out of the
warmth he received from his Muslim brethren coupled with the improved
security situation in the state.
"Even if Boko Haram insurgents attack us, there are some safety measures we had been taught to take.
"One,
we should avoid overcrowded places. Secondly, if there is a bomb blast,
we should lie flat. I am 100 per cent confident that I will go and
return to my family safely after the programme," he said.
Another corps member, Mr John Zachariah, attributed his strong Christian faith as the reason why he chose to serve in Borno.
Zachariah said because he believed God was the best security for any man, "I have decided not to relocate elsewhere.’’
